Rainwater Harvesting

This rain barrel can be found at the OSU Botanical Gardens. Constructed in 2008, this rain barrel utilizes the existing roof gutter system to capture stormwater.

Rainwater harvesting is a method of capturing stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces, such as a roof. The captured stormwater is then stored in rain barrels or large tanks for later use. Rainwater can have several uses such as lawn irrigation, water for livestock, and fire protection. Rainwater can be used in many cases when purified drinking water is not necessary. Rainwater harvesting can be performed on small-scales, using a rain barrel to water your garden, or on large-scales using cisterns to water a golf course. These workshops can include information on rainwater harvesting systems, uses, and benefits.
